Cat's Words

The Cat & Jack program welcomes comments and suggestions. Our goal is to better inform our clients and the public with up to date techniques and theories on behaviour management. Our first column will be about prevention. Since an ounce is supposedly worth a pound, we feel your investment will be well worth it. The following points will help you understand some of the basics.

Leadership vs. Dictatorship:

(Mental guidance vs. Physical force)

In the dog training world you will often hear the word Leadership, Alpha Dog or even Big Kahuna. Although it is true that our dogs need a Leader it is often misrepresented as something you must demand, force or pursue. It is my belief that an animal as intelligent as a dog will not be fooled so easily. So, if your day to day life puts you at the bottom of your pack think twice before you give yourself a promotion. In the old days we would have just used a harsh vehement approach, which of course was the footing to create a subordinate. Today we have proven that our development of a leader comes from trust, respect and honour.

Taken from Webster’s Dictionary

Def.  Leader – someone who acts as a guide, to show the way by accompanying him, to hold and take to a place, to be at the head of the group

Def.  Dictator – someone who acts like a petty tyrant
